Early morning photos of the tufas at Mono Lake
These tufas were formed from under ground springs pushing up calcium. The calcium reacts with the carbonates in the lake water causing the mixture to turn into limestone.
The lake was at record low level a few years ago because the water Mono Basin was being diverted away from it. This diversion that started in 1941 dropped the water level allowing these tufas to become visible. Thanks to conservationists the lake is being filled up again which is a good thing but in a few years it will hide these tufas again.
The local town is Lee Vining, which is next to Yosemite National Park in California.
